In this book, I reflect on how mathematics was taught to us and why some of us almost grew to hate it—well, some without the ‘almost.’ I want to propose that we break the vicious cycle of math as a cursed subject. I also intend to reveal the inner workings of school arithmetic: why we have ten digits, where exactly I carry ‘the one’ when I carry it, and some of the beautiful investigations and visual proofs we can explore when we look at math through a different lens. I want to make it clear that there is a side to mathematics that makes much more sense—one that involves thinking and touching, as well as playing, building, enjoying, doubting, arguing, and thinking all over again.
A witty, liberating guide to settling the score with school mathematics.
Perfect for anyone who grew up fearing math and for parents determined to break the cycle for the next generation.
